Nitrogen mineralization in the humus soil horizon of the floodplain forest at Lednice in Moravia [Czech Republic]

In the present paper the results are presented of the investigation of changes in the concentrations of water-soluble ammonia nitrogen, 1 per cent K2SO4 solution extracted ammonia nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen which took place in the soil horizon A of the floodplain forest at Lednice in Moravia during 42-day incubation trials. Ammonification and nitrification rates after increasing the moisture content of soil samples to 30 per cent and 60 per cent of maximum water capacity (MVK) were calculated on the basis of these changes. In the course of incubation trial great differences in organic nitrogen mineralization were observed between the variants of 30 per cent and 60 per cent MVK. Total nitrogen mineralization (NH4-N + NO3-N) in the soil horizon A was higher by 108 per cent in the soil samples with the moisture content of 60 per cent MVK, in comparison with the moisture content of 30 per cent MVK. NO3-N production made about 90 per cent of the total mineral N at 60 per cent MVK, but only 50 per cent at 30 per cent MVK.
