The DNA of 73 pathogenic Aujeszky's virus strains isolated in the north-east part of Hungary was studied with Bam HI and Kpn I restriction enzymes. On the basis of their DNA structure, the isolates were placed in 6 DNA-structure groups: prototype, BAM 5-10/5-12, Bam 8-8'/8-13, Kpn F1 + F2, Kpn E-F and Kpn C-D. /The last two variations were found only in this part of the country./ With a pragmatic epidemiological investigation following the infection of several large-scale pig plants, the most likely source of the virus and the most likely way of introduction could be determined. As to the introduction, certain causes for suspicion were excluded, while evidence was found for others.
