Effect of cane variety on ethanol production from sugar cane juice

Celestine-Myrtil-Martin, D.A. (Institut National de Recherches Agronomiques, Pointe a Pitre, Guadeloupe)
An experiment was conducted in Guadeloupe in 1989, to assess the effect of sugar cane variety on ethanol yield during fermentation. Varieties B47258 and B8008 were compared supplemented or not with yeast extract. Fermentation kinetics were monitored using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to measure total sugars and ethanol contents. Juice of B47258 gave significantly higher alcohol production than did juice of B8008 (five times more). Ethanolic yields obtained with B47258 were comparable to theoretical yield established by Pasteur. These first results demonstrated sugar cane breeding and selection possibilities in improving ethanol production from cane juice.
