Effect of size and duration of rim-lungs on tea yields and plucker productivity in the pruning year
1990
Mwakha, E.
Seedling tea were lung-pruned, retaining either 0 (cut-across), 4,8,12 or 16 rim-lungs per bush, removed either at bud-break or at tipping-in, or the 'savani' lung (central one-third of the bush), retained until the tipping-in. Tea yields and plucking speeds during the year of prune showed optimum rim-lung size of 12 branches per bush retained until tipping-in and a plucking speed of 32kg green leaf per plucker per day. The 'savani' lung was found to be larger than the optimum lung size. It was suggested that the effects of height and timing of pruning on optimum lung size should be investigated.
