Pythium sp. was readily isolated using pieces of eggplant fruit as bait for isolating the fungus from infested soil. Plants affected showed rotting at the base near the root and eventually leaves turned yellow and died. Morphological studies showed that the fungus was identified as Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson) fitz. It grew well both on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) and Oatmeal Agar (OMA). Papaya seedlings of different ages were inoculated with P. aphanidermatum. The seedlings became resistant as they increased in age. At 14 days after seedling emergence, infection was 93.71% and 7.82% after 72 days. Preliminary greenhouse screening of 103 papaya advanced lines and accessions showed that 3 were resistant and 5 were moderately resistant to the disease.
