Most commercial corn hybrid seeds are treated with the fungicide metalaxyl as a protection against Peronosclerospora philippinensis (Weston) Shaw causing Philippine corn downy mildew. In many corn growing areas the F2 generation of these hybrids are planted without metalaxyl treatment raising the spectre of an epidemic since many parental lines were derived from susceptible foreign sources. To determine the severity of infection, hybrids entered in the National Cooperative Testing Program, being implemented by the College of Agriculture, UPLB [University of the Philippines Los Banos, College, Laguna, Philippines], were advanced to F2 and tested during the spreader technique where infector rows around the experimental plot were seeded and seedlings inoculated before the F2 seeds were planted. Results of tests showed that the F2 generation of most hybrids were susceptible with the Dekalb hybrids. Some hybrids appeared to possess resistance to P. philippinensis.
