Evaluation of potato germplasm for resistance to Pseudomonas solanacearum in Mindanao [Philippines]

Fourteen trials were conducted to evaluate 5 sets of germplasm from December 1988 to October 1989. The progenies BR63.74 x LB bulk and BR63.74 x I-1039 were good yielders both as transplants and seedling tubers followed by P-5 x BR112-113 and P-5 x 7XY.1. The progenies BR63.76 x I-1039 and Ackersegen x BWB were not high yielders as transplants but had considerable yield as seedling tubers. Among advanced progenies, 384015.10 x 7XY.1 had no bacterial wilt (BW) or Erwinia infection but yield was lower (18.8 t/ha) compared to MS-82.60 x 378676.6 which yielded 25.0 t/ha but was susceptible to soft rot (SR) caused by Erwinia. Many clones selected from different sets are at different stages of evaluation. Selected clones were kept for further evaluation for resistance to Bacterial wilt, Erwinia and tuber yield. Total tuber yields of some of these clones were far superior to the local cultivars. Best local clones were derived from, crosses between adopted progenitors with superior BW resistance under Mindanao conditions [Philippines]. Ten clones will be included on-farm trials
