Influence of legume-intercrops in the numbers of the corn borer [Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee)] and its natural enemies

Several workers have claimed that intercropping legumes with maize may result in a significant reduction of corn borer number on maize. It was postulated that a high proportion of the newly hatched corn borer larval population actively disperse moving from plant to plant and those that land on the legumes intercrop may be subjected to high predation rate than when on maize plants. Field studies conducted at UPLB [Philippines Univ., Los Banos, College, Laguna, Philippines] indicated that indeed there were more predators in species and numbers on legume intercrops than on maize plants. Death of dispersing early instar corn borer larvae on the legume intercrops, however, may also be due to the inability of legumes to support larval development and this may also be a significant contributory factor. Laboratory studies showed that corn borer larvae survived poorly on the species (peanut, bush sitao, mungbean, and cowpea).
