Comparison of foliar and soil nitrogen fertilizer management of growth, nitrogen use efficiency and yield of direct seeded rice
1991
Mnzava, M.N.W.
Results from greenhouse experiment indicated that best yield (20.3 g/hill) was obtained when 230 mg N/pot was topdressed into the soil at PI [panicle initiation] stage. On the average all treatments had very low (10%) high density grain index and very high poor grain number (46%). Percentage N content in leaves, culms, sheaths and roots differed significantly among treatments starting from PI up to maturity. Nitrogen use efficiency was highest when 230 mg N/pot was top dressed into soil at PI stage. Field experiment showed the highest (43.4%) high density grain index when 30 kg N/ha was applied in foliar at 7 DBFLW) [days before flowering]. Percentage N content in leaves, culms and sheaths were influenced by N-treatments depending on specific growth stages. Nitrogen use efficiency was not significantly influenced by N treatments under field condition. The present study indicated that foliar application of N had slightly better grain yield than soil N application under field condition, but very poor yield under greenhouse environment. N split application had better yield than single basal application in both experiments.
