A model was developed to simulate the dispersal and deposition of spores of the rice blast fungus Pyricularia oryzae in and over the rice canopy. In the model, sporulation and liberation of spores in the canopy are based on data on blast lesion distribution. Dispersal and deposition of spores in and above the rice canopy were simulated by modifying Legg and Powell's model. Calculated spore numbers agreed with numbers measured on horizontal glass slides in the rice canopy. The model suggests that windspeed and leaf area index of rice plants affect spore concentration and number of spores deposited on leaves of plants susceptible to P. oryzae.
