Control of pests and pathogens requiring the use of pesticides and fungicides are still one of the important components of integrated pest management (IPM). The use of pesticides has been established to provide least yield variability compared to other methods of control. In many occasions, however, the use of pesticides have been reportedly abused by farmers due to their fear of losing a crop. Consequently, the basic aim of IPM, that is, to create a safer environment is already compromised. With the increasing population of the country, the greater challenge to the IPM advocates is to come up with the IPM concept that would be attractive and adopted by the majority of farmers. The pesticide industry is on hand to help develop pesticides complementary to the other methods used in IPM. The research and development of any pesticide takes a long time at prohibitive costs that by the time it is released for the market the farmers may not be able to afford it. Recommendations on what the pesticide industry can offer to government research institutions are discussed in the paper.
