Phytoplankton community dynamics in relation to meteorological and physico-chemical conditions in Laguna de Bay [Philippines]

This study was conducted in Mayondon, Los Banos [Laguna, Philippines] from October 1984-October 1985 to determine the possible interrelationships of meteorological conditions with the changes in the physico-chemical water quality characteristics and the biological components of phytoplankton communities in an area. The end of the rainy season was characterized by high turbulence brought about by northeasterly winds. This resulted in high total solid content, which reduced visibility through the water column. Rising electrical conductivity resulted most likely from the inflow of salts caused by lake tributaries and not from evaporation which remained low. Lake water cleared up in the hot dry months, at the same time that electrical conductivity increased with the increased rates of evaporation. The rainy months were accompanied by reduced water transparency, rising nitrogen and phosphorus levels and decreased electrical conductivity. Three main algal groups were represented. In December after the rainy season, Microcystis aeruginosa began forming peak populations. High numbers of this algal were again formed during the hot dry months while other algal species maintained smaller numbers. Low nutrients prevailed while M. aeruginosa was in bloom densities. The rainy period eliminated the bloom of M. aeruginosa giving way to a more diverse group of diatoms that gained dominance as nutrients increased.
