The work of the Food Legume Improvement Program of ICARDA in 1989 is reported on the improvement of Kabuli chickpea, lentil, and faba bean within the framework of the Medium-term Plan of the Center. The work is reported on kabuli chickpea improvement including use of improved germplasm by NARS, screening for multiple stresses, screening genotypes for response to supplemental irrigation, improved germplasm for wheat based system, genetic study, evaluation of germplasm, application of biotechnology, diseases, entomology, microbiology, physiology and agronomy, and quality; lentil improvement including breeding, crop physiology, harvest mechanization, microbiology, application of biotechnology, entomology, quality - dehulling; faba bean improvement including development of cultivars and genetic stocks, diseases, entomology, microbiology; dry pea improvement including germplasm collection and evaluation, preliminary yield trials, adaptation trial, response to population and moisture supply, and response to date of sowing; Orobanche studies including chemical control, screening of herbicides, glyphosate tolerance in faba bean, lentil, and pea, selection of resistant genotypes of lentil, chickpea, and forage legumes; soil solarization; biological control; manual control; crop rotation; integrated control; international testing program; collaborative projects including Nile Valley Regional Program (Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia), North Africa/ICARDA Food Legume Programs (Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria); training and networking; and workshops
