Foliar application of potassium to increase yield and quality of corn
1989
Montanee Sestapukdee
Though K-supply in the soil was adequate, a single foliar K-application on any day between the 50 % tasselling date and 7 days after the 50 % tasselling date increased yields and sweetness of supersweet corn and yields of field corn. A foliar K-application on the third day after 50 % tasselling date was the most effective. In application of repetitive sprayings, the second application later than 7 days after the 50 % tasselling date not only suppressed the effects of spraying on the most effective date but could also reduce yields. Potassium nitrate solution at a concentration of 2.5 % and application to all the aerial parts of corn were determined to be the most effective. For corn grown with adequate N and P supply and with low supplies of both N and P in balance, the timely foliar K-application was effective but for corn grown with high supply of one of the nutrients but low supply of the other the timely K-fertilization was ineffective.
