Variation of yield components of gamma irradiated soybean (M1 - M3)

Plant height and number of branches per plant were significant in the M2 generation however, only days to maturity was significant in the M3 generation. In M2 generation, plant height and number of branches per plant were less than in the mean of control treatment. Days to maturity of irradiated populations of M3 generation were later than that of the control treatment. In respect to yield per plant, both M2-M3 population were lower than that of the control. In both M2 and M3 generations, number of branches per plant and 100 seed weight showed no variation. The number of pods per plant did not show significant variation in the M2 generation, but the variation was observed in the M3-generation. The genetic variation was high in plant height, days to maturity and yield per plant in both of M2 and M3 generation. The estimated values of heritability in M2 generation ranged from 1.6-31.5 % for plant height, 57.6-87.9 % for days to maturity and 5.6-45.0 % for yield per plant. In M3 generation, the estimated values of heritability ranged from 1.2-32.3 % for plant height, 31.8-55.9 % for number of pods per plant, 40.8-69.5 % for days to maturity, 2.1-51.5 % for yield per plant. Thirty-six high yielding M2 plants were selected for advance to M3 plant-to-row to estimate the heritability by correlation between M2 and M3. They were 21.1 %, 76.4 %, 1.5 %, -5.0 %, 23.6 % and 55.7 % for the plant height, days to maturity, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, yield per plant and 100 seed weight, respectively.
