Yam breeding at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture

Yams, Dioscorea rotundata and D. alata are emphasised in IITA's yam breeding programme. The main objective of yam breeding is the development of clones resistant to nematodes; virus, wide adaptability and good storability. The approaches used and progress made at IITA in yam improvement are summarised.
