The objective of this investigation was to assess possibilities of increasing wheat yield potential by introduction changes in the architecture of the spike. Following the crossings between cultivars and lines possesssing normal (Sava and Forlani), tetrastichon (ZG-T-171/1) and branched spike (ZG-172), genotypes with such spikes occurred in the F2-generation Estimated on the basis of the mean values for spike productivity in the F2-generation the group of genotypes with the normal spike was on the level or slightly better than the group of genotypes with the tetrastichon and the branched spike. The analysis of the best five spikes from each group indicated a definite superiority of the progenies with the normal spike over the other progenies as well as over the parents. These results show that the crossing of genotypes differing in spike architecture may produce recombinations possesing normal spikes which have a number of advantages over the branched spike.
