A trial was carried out in 1984-88 on the effect of various mixtures of grasses and legumes on soil water content, yields, fruit mass and vegetative growth of cv. Golden Delicious, planted in 1982 on clay alluvial soil. Treatment 7 gave the highest soil water content (the cultivated plots), which amounted to 19.7% whereas treatment 3 (Lolium perenne + Lolium multiflorum + Phleum pratense + Dactylis glomerata + Avena elatior L. + Festuca pratensis + Trifolium repens) gave the lowest water content (18,1%). Treatment 3 gave the highest amount of fresh grass mass (38.850 kg/ha), whereas treatment 2 (Phleum pratense + Trifolium repens) gave the lowest amount of it (28.520 kg/ha) and the highest dry matter content. The highest yields of Golden Delicious were obtained with treatment 5 (24.3 kg/tree) and the lowest with treatment 2 (15.3 kg/tree). The greatest fruit mass was obtained with treatment 6 (158.1 g) and the lowest with treatment 2 (15.3 kg/tree). The greatest fruit mass was obtained with treatment 6 (158.1 g) and the smallest with treatment 5 (152 g). The greatest trunk circumference at the height of 30 cm was obtained with treatment 1 (22.1 cm) and the lowest with treatment 4 (19.1 cm).
