Inheritance of biochemical parameters in wheat

Biochemical parameters, nitrate reductase (NR) activity, and -amylase activity and protein content were evaluated in 5 x 5 diallel crosses of wheat. The mode of inheritance in F1 was different (intermediate, dominant or superdominant) depending on the character and cross combination. ANOVA for combining ability showed highly significant general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) variances, except for alpha-amylase activity in grain, which showed non significant SCA values. Promising segregates may be expected from the combinations which include Atlas 66 and Talent as one parent, because they were best general combiners for the majority of investigated biochemical parameters.
