In terms of investigating the effect of nitrogen applied at later stages of plant prowth, 3-year trials were conducted under agroecological conditions of northwestern Croatia (Yugoslavia). Effect of N-fertilization with 56.26 kg/ha, 111.5 kg/ha und 187.5 kg/ha, applied at V3 and R2, on dry matter weight of root nodules (Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain D 344), yield of seeds, protein and oil content, at two plant densities was studied. Under conditions of well-established symbolic association of soybean and B. japonicum, all N-rates had a negative effect on dry matter of root nodules and oil content of seeds, no effect on yield changes, but they did increase total nitrogen content of seeds.
