Immunogenecity of bivalent inactivated oil vaccine prepared from IBR and PI-3 viruses was examined in the laboratory (guinea-pig) and then in 45 heifers in fattening and 30 highly pregnant cows. Immunogenicity was examined employing serum neutralization (SN) test and passive haemagglutination assay (PHA) for IBR and haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test for the PI-3 (parainfluenza-3) virus. The effects of a 2 or 5 ml dose on the immune response were tested in guinea-pigs and in heifers put to fattening. It was established that immune response to IBR (infective bovine rhinotracheitis) virus was not particularly affected by dosage in vaccinated guinea-pigs and vaccinated and revaccinated heifers. HI-antibody titre for PI-3 virus was directly correlated to the applied dose in both animal species. PHA proved less sensitive for the titre of IBR specific antibodies than the SN test. Highly gravid cows that had antibodies to both viruses before they were vaccinated reacted strongly after vaccination and revaccination whereby their IBR antibody titre rose. Reactions to PI-3 virus were mild or lacking altogether.
