Milk sampled in 27 high-yielding Holstein-Friesian dairy cows at the beginning of drying-up period has shown 17 animals (62.96%) bacteriologically positive (staphylococci, streptococci, Escherichia coli). These animals were, therefore, subject to intramammary application of antibiotic cream into all four teats after last milking at the drying-up. Antibiotic cream contained a combination of penicillin, streptomycin and vitamin A (Byklocillin SM/500000, in tubes). The so treated animals were then observed until they calved. Clinical and cytological examinations 15 days postpartum revealed not one case of clinical mastitis. Such result can be accounted for by the prophylactic antibiotic therapy at the beginning of drying-up period.
