Analysis of the karyotype of a male specimen of Carassius auratus gibelio (Pisces, Cyprinidae) caught in the river Tamis (Yugoslavia) revealed a diploid chromosome number (2n=100). Chromosomes were classified into the following groups: 60 M, SM, SA and 40 A and the NF value was determined to be 160. The results were compared with relevant data from the available literature. According to numerous results of other authors this species is found in Yugoslav waters only in the form of gynogenetic, triploid females. Our findings in the male of Carassius auratus gibelio demonstrate the presence of a bisexual population of this fish species and opens a new area for population-genetic and ecological studies.
