The CARDI Tissue Culture Lab and Yam Propagation Centre
1988
The primary reason for the creation of the CARDI Tissue Culture Lab and Yam Propagation Centre is to provide virus free planting material for the local yam crop, which was suffering from a virus problem which caused internal brown spotting of tubers. Apart from yams, cassava is propagated and developed on a commercial basis as a livestock feed. The multiplication of anthurium planting material in culture is aimed at assisting in the development of this plant as a commercial export crop. The Lab is also involved in the F.A.O. "Root Crop Project", under which varieties of cassava and yam are rapidly propagated for distribution throughout the region.
