Notes on the biology, behaviour and biocontrol agents of mango defoliator, Cricula trifenestrata (Lepidoptera : Saturniidae) [in Bangladesh]

The biology, behaviour and biocontrol agents of mango defoliator, Cricula trifenestrata Helfer were studied. To complete its life cycle, C. trifenestrata required 76 to 92 days (mean 85 days) of which mean larval and pupal periods were 41 and 26 days respectively at constant temperature of 25 deg C and 70% relative humidity. Inter and Intra generation competition for larval food, shelter and sites for pupation led some weaker larvae either to die or fail to pupae. One egg parasitoid, Telenomus sp. (Scelionidae), and two pupal parasitoids, Mesocomys orientalis Ferr. (Chalcididae) and Sarcophaga sp. (Sarcophagidae) of C. trifenestrata were recorded for the first time in Bangladesh. Natural parasitization of eggs was up to 100% and that of pupae ranged from 7.84 to 100%, Among the parasitoids, Telenomus sp. parasitized up to to 100% of eggs and 79.71% pupae were parasitized by Brachymeria criculae (Khol). Mesocomys orientalis and sarcophaga sp. parasitized small proportion of pupae of the mango defoliator.
