Reexamination of reproduction parameters of the mite Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans
1991
Ifantidis, M.D. (Aristotle Univ., Thessaloniki (Greece). Lab. of Apiculture)
The conclusion by Rehm and Ritter (1989) that the male descendant of the Varroa mite is regulary produced first, is confirmed here with a new method. Thus our earlier assumption (Ifantidis, 1983) is proved wrong. Because the developmental period of the female Varroa mite is shorter than it was estimated earlier (Ifantidis, 1983), it was necessary to reexamine the values of some parameters concerning the reproduction of Varroa. It is confirmed that the mean number of adult female descendants per mite within a worker brood-cell is about the same that was found earlier (Ifantidis, 1984) and in any case it does not exceed one, in contrast to the estimate of Buechler and Drescher (1990). The possible factors, that may be responsible for the relatively low rate of malreplication of this mite are discussed.
