[Acidifying additives (nermosal, foraform, formic acid) use in permanent pasture silage]
1991
Dunner W, Christian Andres
The purpose of the trial was to evaluate the effect of 3 fermentation inhibitors: Formic acid (F) 3.5 l/ton, Foraform (FF) 2 kg/ton, and Nermosal (N) 2.8 kg/ton. A permanent pasture with 69.5% of perennial ryegrass (L. perenne), was harvested in November (following a 75 days rest) at the state of emergency of ears and ensiled in 8 experimental cylindrical silos (350 kg capacity). The fresh forage had an average of 20% DM; it was compacted at ensiling time and left with a 200 kg/m2 weight on top. As a group, the additives lowered the peak temperature (20.7 deg C) reached by the control, (C, no additive) by 0.6 to 2.5 deg C, treatment F being the most effective. Losses of total DM via effluents monitored for 51 days, and were 7.8, 10.5, 15.8 and 17.2 g of DM/kg of silage DM, for Control and treatments N, FF and F, respectively (P 0.05), this lack of statistical difference is attributed to a large variation among replicates. The average composition ot the effluents was (% of total DM) 24.12, 23.83, 25.73 and 23.82 for CP and 21.61, 23.44, 22.89 and 24.2 for ash, for C, N, FF and F, respectively (P 0.05). In the ensiled material the contents of DM (toluene distillation) were 19.75, 20.0, 18.75 and 24.5 for C, N, FF and F, the latter being higher (P 0.05) than the rest. The crude protein (% DM) was 14.1, 15.2, 15.1 and 14.8, and the contents of EM (mcal/kg DM) was 2.39, 2.49, 2.53 and 2.54, respectively (P 0.05). Final pH was 4.47, 4.53, 4.08 and 4.01, F being lower (P 0.05) than N. The content of N-NH3 (% of total N) was 12.37, 9.25, 10.25 and 8.15 in silages C, N, FF and F, respectively; F being lower (P 0.05) than C. There were no differences either in total production of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, propanol) or of acids (acetic, butyric and lactic); however the ratio lactic/acetic was improved with all the additives
