[Effect of seeding rate and nitrogenous fertilization on yield and quality of carrots (Daucus carota L.) [Chantenay and de Colmar] in the province of Valdivia]

The aims of this work were to evaluate the behavior of two carrot cvs. (Chantenay and de Colmar) in their yield and root quality, after being submitted to different seeding and nitrogen rates. According to the results, it can be concluded that root yield of Chantenay cultivar was higher than that of De Colmar. However, De Colmar presented a more even distribution of its yield fractionated into categories (first, second, and waste categories). De Colmar would be more marketable in fresh because of its larger roots which are more convenient for the fresh market. The seeding rate that gave the higher root yield was that of 3 kg/ha. This one together with that of 2 kg/ha achieved the main marketable root yields. Regarding nitrogen rate, 64 kg/ha would be more suitable to obtain marketable yields under the climatic and soil conditions of Valdivia. Foliage weight was positively associated with the seeding and nitrogen rates. The average values obtained were 9,28 ton/ha for Chantenay and 12,59 ton/ha for De Colmar, respectively. As for the quality parameters, the cultivars presented major differences in dry matter and titratable acidity. In general, The quality parameters were not related with the seeding and nitrogen rates. They ranged from 6.47 to 6.52 for pH; from 9.12% to 9.56% for dry matter; from 0.0094 to 0.0101% for titratable acidity; from 68 ml to 69 ml for 100 g of fresh weight in juice volume, and an average of 7.3% for soluble solids. Sugar contents were not affected by the seeding and nitrogen rates. Nitrogen root content, likewise sugar in the roots, did not show any response to the different seeding rates, but they did respond to the different nitrogen rates. Sugar levels ranged from 2.08% to 3.02%. Nitrogen levels ranged from 0.65% to 1.05%
