Six boars and 6 gilts at weaning were actively immunized against gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) to observe changes in endocrine and reproductive function associated with immunoneutralization of endogenous GnRH. Two injections of GnRH conjugated to bovine serum ablumin (BSA) induced production of antibodies against GnRH in all immunized boars and gilts. Active immunization against GnRH reduced plasma concentration of testosterone (P0.01), paired testes weight (P0.01), paired epididymis weight (P0.01), weights of ovary and uterus (P0.01) and seminiferous tubule diameter (P0.01) compared with controls. These results indicate that the immune response induced by inoculation of GnRH-BSA in boars and gilts neutralized the biological activity of endogenous GnRH and inhibited the synthesis of testosterone, progesterone and estradiol-17 beta, resulting in blocking the development of sexual organs
