The relationship between diurnal changes of titratable acidity, osmolality, levels of malate and citrate and the net uptake of CO2 was investigated in two cultivars of Ananas comosus. The cv. Brecheche is originally cultivated under partial shade in palm swamps along the middle Orinoco basin, while the cv. Spanish Red is the main commercial cv. cultivated in Venezuela. Both cultivars were grown in a phytotron under similar temperature and humidity conditions but contrasting irradiance. In all treatments the Brecheche plants had higher nitrogen contents and specific leaf areas than the Spanish Red plants. The gas exchange experiments indicated that the cv. Spanish Red had a lower net daily carbon gain than the cv. Brecheche, perhaps as a result of its lower nitrogen content. The results confirmed the accumulation of citric acid in A. comosus accounting for 5 up to 19 % of total nocturnal acidity change.
