Management of Acid Soils in Asosa and Welega Regions
1992
Tadesse Yohannes
Asosa and Welega regions are areas of high rainfall. In these regions one of the major factors that limits crop production is soil acidity. More than 1000 soil samples from different areas of the regions were collected and analyzed for pH content. Some 67 per cent of these were very strongly to strongly acidic. Data from an experiment on maize at Nejo Awraja indicated that yield could be increased by applying CaCO3. Another trial on African finger millet, using lime and different levels of NP fertilizers, showed a significant initial response to lime with the highest yield obtained by applying 3 t/ha of lime.
