Studies on the qualitative characters of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) lines with special regard to association ability.

Nagy, L. (Ontozesi Kut. Int., Szarvas (Hungary))
The qualitative characters of the Italian ryegrass variety Szarvasi 36, and 9 of its "C" and 3 of its "D" lines, were studied in 2 types of associated planting methods, using the diploid variety Whisper and the tetraploid variety Terli as the control. The data recorded were germ mass, green mass at 4, 6 and 9 weeks, fodder yield, seed yield and seed yield components. With respect to mean individual germ mass and to fodder yield in pure and mixed stands, Szarvasi 36 gave values similar to those of Whisper, in all respects terli was better than the other 2 varieties, with the exception of seed-producing ability which could not be compared, since the 2 foreign varieties did not even produce seed-stalks. When grown in association with red clover, the fodder-producing to that in pure stands, giving an increase of 106,3 o/o at a red clover ratio of 30 o/o and 32,9 o/o at a red clover ratio of 70 o/o. The fodder production of the lines was generally higher than that of the initial Szarvasi 36 variety.
