[Effect of different packing systems and locations on quality and shelf life of corn and soybean seeds]

There are many factors affecting the quality and shelf life (keeping quality) of corn and soybean seeds, other than the post harvest handling system properly and correctly. An experiment was done to identify the effect of different packing techniques and location of storage of corn and soybean seeds on the seed quality and storage ability. Results of this study revealed that seed moisture content of less than 10 percent, temperature 20 degree and relative humidity levels, of (86 percent) were good storage condition if the seeds were stored in plastic (Polyethylene) bags of 0,1 mm thickness. Therefore, this could be taken into consideration in maintaining the quality and shelf life of seeds for 6 months storage. Corn seeds could be maintained at a relatively higher temperature and relative humidity, i.e. 20 degree C and 89 percent respectively, particulary if they were stored in kerosene tin container. Viability of the corn seeds was still maintained at 80 percent for 6 months, whereas that of the soybean seeds decreased to 60 percent. Fungal diseases of seed corn by Aspergillus spp. were more abundant than that caused by Aspergillus flavus and Culvularia spp.
