Low cost soil solarization using pre-plant black plastic cover (research note)
1991
Al-Asa'd, M.A. | Abu-Gharbieh, W.I. (Jordan Univ., Amman (Jordan))
The objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of soil solarization using black vs. transparent plastic tarping. The research was carried out in two separate experiments (tomato and eggplant) in the Central Jordan Valley during the 1981/1982 growing seasons. The treatment comprised: tarping with transparent plastic for one or two months; tarping with black cover for two months; MB fumigation, and nontreated control. The results showed increased effectiveness of all treatments in reducing soilborne fungi and nematodes and increasing productivity over the nontreated control. Furthermore, such results indicated that black plastic tarping reduced production costs through the use of the same plastic sheets for soil solarization and subsequently of postplant mulching
