Effect of low root temperature on whole-plant water relations and flower induction in young satsuma mandarin trees

The influence of low root temperature (15 or 10 degrees C) with non-inductive shoot temperature (20 degrees C) on whole-plant water potential and flower induction in one-year-old satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc. cv. Hayashi (Unshu) trees grafted on trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata Raf.) was examined. Leaf xylem water potential of 10 degrees C was lower than that of 15 degrees C or control except during August, when there was little difference among the three treatments. Low root temperature inhibited root and shoot growth together with reduction of chlorophyll content in the leaves. Flower buds were produced after defoliation as a result of low root temperature and the number of flower buds and the percentage of flowering shoots increased in trees exposed to greater duration of low root temperature. The flower inductive response was greater at 10 degrees C root temperature compared with 15 degrees C
