Effect of plant density and shoot number on the yield and quality in spray carnation [Dianthus caryophyllus]

Experiments were carried out in order to make clear the effect of plant density and lateral shoot number per plant on the yield and quality. 1) The number of cut flowers per 1 centiare was greater when 8 rooted cuttings were planted in a row (width of bed used was 90 cm). But the number of cut flowers with good quality was greater when 4 rooted cuttings were planted in a row. 2) Weight of all cut flowers per 1 centiare was greater in 4 plants with 4 lateral shoots per plant in a row. But the difference among experimental pots was small. 3) From these results, it was concluded that optimum plant density and shoot number for spray carnation production was 4 plants with 4 to 6 lateral shoots per plant, in a row of 90 cm width
