The role of the informal sector in the development of small and intermediate-sized cities: A case study of Nakuru

Large numbers of people in developing countries work in small, informal enterprises. They run retail "Kiosks", hawk local and imported consumer goods, provide services and manufacture clothing, furniture, utensils and other basic goods. Research on such informal activities has been focused on large cities. This paper tries to fill the research gap by doing a case study of Nakuru, one of Kenya's major towns. It is noted that just as in big cities, informal sector firms tend to proliferate rather than expanding or integrating into related industries and are capital intensive.
