Inheritance of plant, yield and fruit quality in top cross with "Harunoka" in the forcing strawberry [Fragaria chiloensis]

The additive and non-additive genetic effects, the phenotypic correlation and the genetic correlation for 11 characters in the forcing culture were evaluated in 13 seedling populations produced between "Harunoka" and 13 strawberry cultivars. "Harunoka", which is very adaptive for the forcing culture, was used as male. 13 cultivars, which consisted of 8-foreign and 5 Japanese cultivars, were used as female. From the estimation of the correlation between mid-parent value, F1 mean and heterosis, it was suggested that the additive effect was high on leaf length, leaf number, average fruit weight, soluble solids content, fruit skin color and fruit finish, but the non-additive effect was high on flowering date, total fruit weight, total fruit number and fruit shape. The heritability estimates from parent-offspring regression were over 0.8 for fruit finish, leaf number and fruit skin color, over 0.5 for soluble solids content, leaf length and average fruit weight, and very low for total fruit weight, total fruit number and flowering date. Average fruit weight showed highly positive phenotypic and genetic correlations with petiole length and leaf length. Therefore, petiole length and leaf length appeared to be a good indicator of average fruit weight. Highly negative genetic correlation was found between soluble solid content and fruit finish. If this relationship is true, it may be difficult to combine high soluble solid content with good finish. Progenies from foreign cultivars had lower soluble solids content and higher fruit finish than those from Japanese cultivars did but had no difference as for yield. No problem was detected to use foreign cultivars as breeding parents of the forcing cultivar, excepting a decline of soluble solids content
