Fluctuations of root yield and quality of sugar beet depending on locations and crop years were examined using the data of the official variety trials made at 15 locations from 1973 to 1985, in order to evaluate the effect of cultivar preference on the yield of sugar beet. 1) The standard score for each cultivar at each location in each year was estimated to evaluate the performance of each cultivar. 2) In root weight, cultivar Monohill showed high standard scores at several locations for several years. 3) In sucrose content, there was no cultivar showing fairly high standard scores at any location for certain years. 4) In sugar yield, cultivar Monofill and Dihill tended to show high standard scores at a few locations. 5) Therefore, the effect of the cultivar preference seemed to be significant on root weight, while being insignificant on sucrose content, and slightly significant on sugar yield
