Heritability estimation of larval shell length of the Japanesse pearl oyster [Pinctada fucata martensii]

The data from two factorial matings (5 females x 4 males) of the Japanese pearl oysters, Pinctada fucata martensii, were analyzed to estimate the heritabilities of larval shell length on days 4 or 5, 10 and 15. The parents from different geographical populations were used in two experiments. Mean values of heritabilities estimated from sire components (h2s) were 0.335 on day 4 or 5, 0.181 on day 10 and 0.078 on day 15 respectively, all of which were rather smaller than those reported in other bivalve species. The possibility of selective breeding on the larval growth rate in the hatchery was discussed in relation to genetic variance of larval shell length obtained in the present study
