In the present investigation, gene action was found to be predominantly non-additive type for all the characters, except plant height. Grain yield and duration for heading also exhibited additive type of gene action. The fertility restorer line, IET 5656 was adjudged the best general combiner for grain yield. On crossing with male sterile line, Z 97A, it produced hybrid progenies which revealed highest SCA effect for grain yield. Tiller number and plant height behaved as component characters of grain yield. Most of the crosses involving Low x Low and Low x High general combines produced high SCA [specific combining ability] effects for grain yield. Cross combinations between general combines of High x Low and High x High for tiller number as well as Low x Low and Low x Average for taller plant height including High x Low or High x High for dwarfer height also revealed high sca effects. The GCA [general combining ability] and SCA effects were more pronounced in crosses with male fertility restorer lines than what they were in any other crosses.
