Coconut fatty acid was found to exhibit auxin-like growth promoting property comparable to indole acetic acid (IAA) on oat first internode segments. While predominantly growth inhibition was observed with soap or saponified coconut oil, pure coconut oil did not exhibit marked growth promotion nor inhibition. The auxin-like property of coconut fatty acid was found to be mainly due to the presence in large quantity of lauric acid and to smaller quantities of laproic and caprylic acids. Longer chain fatty acids were found to function mainly as growth promoters.
