Molds are microscopic plants. They live on dead or decaying organic matter. Copra molds produces aflatoxin, a toxic and carcinogenic substance scientifically termed, Aspergillus flavus. They reproduce at a very fast rate and patches of molds are visible after only three days from drying. The extent of fungal contamination in copra, one of the country's major dollar earner, is influenced by temperature and relative humidity. It is at the initial stage of copra production - during the drying process, where the level of aflatoxin contamination can be controlled. Drying, curing or any other form of dehydration seems ineffective in this case, as conditions conducive to cell growth have not been eliminated. This novel claimed composition chemically stops the decaying process in copra materials, making it easier to obtain a much lower moisture content and improving its overall quality.
