Farmer participation in corn on-farm research and outreach program in Southern Philippines
1991
Hondrade, R.F.D.
Most cooperators' involvement in the trial management was of the consultative type and their most common reason for participating in the trials was to have free "starter" seeds of the high yielding open-pollinated varieties (OPV's). Consultation in most trials meant that farmers were asked about their problems in corn farming, on treatments to be used, timing of operations, evaluation and dissemination of trial results. Of the three agencies [Department of Agriculture Region 11 and 12, USMARC] the cooperators of the University of Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center (USMARC) achieved the highest level of participation in trial management. The nature and extent of farmer participation in trial management was found to have strong positive relationship with the farmer's level of education and level of technical knowledge of the on-farm trials. It was also positively related with the researchers/extensionists' concept of trial management and attitudes toward farmers' informal research. As compared to the non-cooperators, the farmer-cooperators of the three implementing agencies had significantly better understanding of the on-farm trials, better capacity for seeking out information, were more "research" minded, and performed more roles in their own communities.
