Sweet potato germplasm evaluation in the Philippines in 1990-1991

Two experiments on sweet potato germplasm evaluation were conducted at Canlubang, Laguna [Philippines] from June to November 1990 (wet season trial) and from December 1990 to April 1991 (dry season trial). Clones included Philippine local clones and introduced clones from Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, and the USA. Results indicate a wide diversity in terms of root yield, root number, root size, and dry matter content exists in sweet potatoes evaluated. In general, a higher yield increase from 90 DAP [days after planting] to 120 DAP was obtained in plants grown during the wet season. Average yield increase during the wet season trial was a high 157% compared to 65% during the dry season. Increase in root number per plant and root size were also high during the wet season (41%, and 57%, respectively) than in the dry season (15% and 43%, respectively). Seventeen clones from the wet season trial (yield greater than 350 g/plant) and twenty clones from the dry season trial (yield greater than 450 g/plant) were identified for high yield at 120 DAP.
