Production performance and physiological response of old layer quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica Temminck and Schlegel) given forced molting treatments
1992
Mohammad Azzar Ali
This study was conducted to evaluate the responses of quail hens subjected to different forced molting treatments. One hundred forty quail hens were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. One treatment was designated as control (CON) where the quail hens were not subjected to forced molting treatment. The two other treatment groups were subjected to either conventional feed and water deprivation (FD) or the incorporation of 1.5% zinc oxide from day 1 to day 5 and 3% zinc oxide from day 6 to day 10 in the ration as forced molting treatments. The results from the experiment showed that the control group had significantly higher ovary weight and oviduct weight produced compared to the hens subjected to the zinc oxide and FD groups. There were no statistical significant differences among the three treatments in percent hen-day production, number of eggs produced per quail, average egg mass produced per quail, egg shell thickness, yolk weight, percent yolk, albumen weight, percent albumen, egg shell weight and percent egg shell. On the other hand, ZNO group produced significantly larger egg than the control group.
