Legume cover crop establishment with maize and soybean in the acid soil of Sitiung, Indonesia

The VAM [Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizae] under screenhouse condition did not significantly affect the growth of legume cover crops (centro, kudzu, and cowpea). Kudzu had shorter plant height, higher dry matter yield (DMY), higher crop growth rate (CGR), greater nodule number and higher nodule mass than centro. Hence, Kudzu appeared to be more suitable cover crop in acid soil of Sitiung [Indonesia]. Inoculation of VAM, in combination with triple superphosphate (TSP) application, increased plant height, dry matter yield (DMY), and crop growth rate (CGR) of Kudzu. Hence, VAM inoculation in combination with rock phosphate (RP) gave the highest total dry matter, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, root-shoot ratio and nutrient uptake of corn planted as succeeding crop after Kudzu in the screenhouse. Soil organic matter (OM), effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC), pH, some macro and micronutrient (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Al), soil moisture content, and soil bulk density in field experiment, did not reveal significant differences among treatments. However, Zn content decreased and the ECEC increased sharply after cropping. Nitrogen content of maize and soybean increased when intercropped with Kudzu. Kudzu intercropped with maize and soybean that was sown 15 days after maize and soybean had slightest undesirable effect on the growth of maize and soybean. However, Kudzu provided reasonable amount of organic matter for the succeeding crop as well as increased the long-term soil nitrogen status.
