Research on triticale is conducted by FUNDACEP, Cruz Alta (28 grds. 38 min. south; 53 grds. 36 min. east; 473 masl), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, since 1973. Good grain yields, which some years were significantly higher than wheat, and new legislation recognizing triticale as a commercial crop from 1984 on, stimulated research on this cereal crop. Besides its high yield potential, its tolerance to leaf and stem rust and immunity to powdery mildew, diseases of significant importance in our state, also stimulated the research underway. As limiting factors we point out its lower kernel weight compared to wheat, which determines a lower commercial value, technological performance regarding flour yield and bread making ability inferior to wheat, and susceptibility to Septoria nodorum Berk. and Gibberella zeae Schw. Petch. Data on grain hardness index, sedimentation values, flour yield, protein content, Chopin's alveograph, time required for mixing through the mixogram test, bread volume, core color and internal bread texture of cultivars in the 1985-89 Brazilian Yield Trial are presented. Data on grain yield and kernel weight from the Preliminary Yield Trials, International Triticale Yield Nursery, Regional Yield Trial and the Brazilian Yield Trial are also presented. Cultivars which showed better performance are listed
