Chemical control of brome grass in barley crops in Kenya
1991
Owino, M.G. (Kenya Breweries Limited, Nakuru (Kenya))
Several selective grass herbicides were tested for efficacy in controlling brome grass (Bromus pectinatus Thunb.) in barley crops over a six year test duration. Only one herbicide, Avadex BW EC, showed a generally acceptable level of performance under the various test conditions. Several factors contributed to this level of performance. The results showed that brome grass exerted a severe competition with the barley crop, which is vulnerable at the early growth stages due to poor root development. Early control of brome grass in barley resulted in a significant barley grain response. The grain was superior in nitrogen content and had an increased proportion of large grains. Successful control of brome grass requires a properly planned, long-term control strategy based on a thorough knowledge of brome biology
