Variation in the post-harvest dormancy of the commercial bread wheat cultivars of Ethiopia
1991
Badebo, A. (IAR, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia))
Six bread wheat cultivars were harvested in the field at harvest maturity (12-13 moisture content) and exposed three treatments. The treatments were, direct germination test in a seed laboratory, prechilling at 4 deg C for 5 days and one month storage at room temperature before germination test. Significant differences, X2 (P less than 0.001) are observed among cultivars and treatments. Post-harvest dormancy is low (X2 less than 1) in Enkoy (K4500-L6.A4) and K6290-Bulk and intermediate (P less than 0.01) in Dashen and Gara. High dormancy level (P less than 0.01) is noted in K6295-4A. One month storage is effective to break dormancy for all cultivars but Romany B.C. prechilling at 4 deg C for 5 days is not adequate to break the dormancy of all bread wheat cultivars
